It's OK To Be Sensitive

Hey there,

People will tell you it’s not OK
To be sensitive
But, it is.

“Stop being so sensitive...”
They’ll tell you
To be like them.
To be so cool that you’re frozen
Numb
To the rocks and insults
Hurled at you.

Cold, hard and dead to the
Metal in your back. Full of
Cold, hard and dead
Mettle in your heart. Full of
Cold, hard and dead
Medals on your neck.

Roll around lifeless
As a stone.
Stroll around like the
Cock of the walk.
Feelings are for wimps and
Wimps are wimpy
(Don’t you know?)

But they forget to tell you
There’s no anaesthetic for only pain
When feeling goes away
It goes altogether—
You won’t feel the stab
But you won't feel the kisses either.
You’ll still bleed
But won't remember
How to cry about it.

It’s OK to be a mountain
Of a human
(Huge, magnificent and impossible to move)
If you’re actually made of stone.
But I’m not.
Are you?

How To Be Confident

How To Be Confident

Be fascinating, be irresistible.
Be so intelligent that people wonder
When they’re with you
Why you’re not somewhere else curing cancer.

Be funny, be the soul
Of the party.
Make people laugh so much that when they think
Of you
They can’t tell whether they love you
Or they’re in love with you.

Be good-looking
Be trim, be taut, be a tasty bit of crumpet.
Magnetise people so forcefully that they crash
Into you
And all their defences, and all their walls
And all their meaningless fronts shatter.

Be a winner, be the person at the finish line
Win so much that people around you can afford
To be lazy.
Let them know you’re reliable because
Things always go right
For the lucky folks in your life.

Be the strong, spotless superhuman you know
You should be
Because if you’re not
People will treat you differently
And you’ll know it’s because they can see
That you’re less than perfect.

Have you ever?

Have you ever?

Have you ever killed an insect
And felt guilty afterwards?
(His name was Gary and he was a brave spider)

Have you ever trusted yourself
To go after the thing you want
Instead of the thing you felt capable of getting?
Have you ever done something people told you
You couldn’t?
(Don’t bother… you’ll fail)

Have you ever decided to go on an adventure
And then stayed put?
(I’m not writing this from Fiji)

Have you ever secretly thought you were a genius?
(What’s this poem about, genius)

Have you ever been in love
With someone who didn’t love you back?
Have you ever found true love?
(Is it hiding in Jamaica)

Have you ever listened to a song that made you cry
And you didn’t know why?
(Congratulations on being soft)

Have you ever been lonely and told no one?
(You can tell me)

Have you ever gone to bed angry?
(It’s an excellent strategy for staying awake)

Have you ever wondered why people write poems
That don’t even rhyme?
(I too spend my time asking irrelevant questions)

Have you ever been happy?
(Why did you stop, silly)

Have you ever wanted something too much?
Have you ever held on to something so tightly
That you accidentally crushed it?
(His name was Gary and he was a brave spider)
